Overheating calls cluster in July and August, and the reason is not that the heat breaks things. It is that a cooling system running at 80 percent capacity copes perfectly through spring and gets found out the first time it is asked to work loaded, in traffic, at 95 degrees.
That is also why these calls happen in the worst places. Stopped on I-895 approaching the tunnel, or crawling on the outer loop at four in the afternoon, is exactly the condition that exposes a marginal system.
Airflow first
The most common cause we find is not coolant related at all. It is that air is not getting through the cooling stack.
A tractor has a radiator, a charge air cooler, an AC condenser and often a transmission cooler stacked together in front of the fan. Bugs, road debris, chaff and general grime pack into the fins from the front. From the outside it looks fine because the visible face is the AC condenser. Behind it, the radiator can be substantially blocked.
Cleaning the stack properly, from the engine side outward at low pressure so the debris exits the way it came in, resolves a real proportion of overheating complaints without replacing anything.
The fan clutch
At road speed, ram air does most of the cooling work. Stopped or crawling, the fan does all of it. A fan clutch that is not engaging produces a truck that runs perfectly on the highway and overheats in traffic.
Here is a diagnostic shortcut worth knowing. If your air conditioning also stops cooling in traffic and recovers once you are moving, that is very likely one fault rather than two, because both symptoms come from the same missing airflow. Drivers report those as separate complaints constantly.
Charge air cooler leaks
A leaking charge air cooler is quietly expensive. Boost pressure escapes, the engine gets less air than it needs, combustion runs hotter and dirtier, fuel economy drops and the DPF loads faster.
It rarely announces itself as overheating directly. It shows up as reduced power on grades, worse fuel numbers and more frequent regens, and then contributes to a heat problem in summer. Pressure testing the charge air system is a quick check that gets skipped because the symptoms point elsewhere.
Coolant condition, not just level
Coolant does more than carry heat. The additive package protects against cavitation erosion on the cylinder liners, and it depletes over time. Once it is gone, liner pitting begins, and that is a repair nobody wants.
Testing condition and additive levels at every PM is cheap. Topping up with plain water, or with the wrong coolant type, dilutes protection and is a fairly common cause of problems that appear years later.
A radiator cap that no longer holds pressure is worth mentioning too. The system is pressurised to raise the boiling point, and a weak cap means coolant boils at a lower temperature than the design intends. It is an inexpensive part that causes expensive symptoms.
Water pump and thermostat
A water pump usually warns before it fails, with a weep from the bleed hole or a bearing noise. Both are easy to see during a PM and easy to miss otherwise.
A thermostat stuck partly open causes slow warm up and poor heater performance in winter. Stuck closed or partly closed causes overheating in summer. On engines with more than one thermostat, they get replaced as a set.
What to do when the gauge climbs
Reduce load immediately. Come off the throttle, drop out of cruise, and if you are on a grade, back off rather than pushing to the top. Turning the cab heater on full genuinely helps, since the heater core is a small additional radiator.
If the temperature keeps climbing, stop and shut down. Idling an overheating engine does not cool it effectively because airflow is minimal. Do not open the radiator cap on a hot system.
A tow costs a fraction of a head gasket, and a head gasket costs a fraction of the cracked head that follows if you keep driving.
Coolant loss with no visible external leak is the finding that should worry you most, particularly alongside white smoke or oil that looks milky. That is coolant going somewhere it should not, and continuing to drive turns a repairable engine into an overhaul.
The check worth doing in May
Clean the cooling stack, test coolant condition and freeze point, pressure test the system and the cap, check fan clutch operation, pressure test the charge air system, and inspect hoses and the water pump. An hour per unit in spring, in a yard, prevents the July call from a tunnel approach with a load on.
