Baltimore does not get the sustained deep cold that Minnesota does, and that is not entirely good news. What we get instead is repeated freeze and thaw cycling, wet snow, and some of the heaviest road salt use on the east coast. That combination attacks trucks in specific ways, and the preparation that matters here is not the same as the preparation that matters further north.
Water in the air system is the main event
Compressed air carries moisture. The air dryer removes it. When the desiccant cartridge is saturated, water passes downstream into the tanks, the valves and the brake chambers.
In summer that water is a corrosion problem you find out about eventually. In a Maryland winter, where temperatures cross freezing several times a week, that water freezes inside a valve overnight and the valve stops working. A frozen relay valve means a brake that does not apply or does not release, and a truck that will not move at all when the spring brakes stay set.
- Replace the air dryer desiccant cartridge on schedule, before the season rather than after the first failure.
- Drain the tanks and see what comes out. Water in the tanks means the dryer is not doing its job.
- Check the dryer purge valve is actually purging, which you can hear.
- Confirm the tank drain valves work, and that any automatic drains are not seized.
Test the batteries in October, not January
Cold does not create battery faults, it exposes them. A battery has considerably less available cranking power at freezing than at summer temperatures, while a cold diesel needs substantially more to turn over. A bank that has been quietly marginal since August fails on the first genuinely cold morning.
Every marginal bank in the metro area fails on the same morning, which is why everybody is waiting on those days. Testing individually, checking charging output and voltage drop, and cleaning terminals in the autumn moves that replacement onto your schedule instead of ours.
Fuel, DEF and gelling
Diesel gels when paraffin wax crystallises out at low temperature, and it blocks filters. Winter blend fuel and additives handle most of what Maryland produces, but a truck sitting for several days through a cold snap is more exposed than one running daily.
DEF freezes at around minus eleven Celsius, which we reach occasionally. Systems are designed with heaters for exactly this, so the practical winter task is confirming the DEF tank and line heaters work before you need them. A failed DEF heater produces faults and derates in cold weather that are baffling if you do not know to look for it.
Also worth knowing: DEF has a shelf life and degrades faster in heat. DEF bought in July and still sitting in a drum in December may be out of specification, which will throw quality sensor faults that look like a hardware problem.
Cooling system, which matters in winter too
Coolant that has lost its freeze protection is a genuine risk of a cracked block, and coolant condition drifts over time. Testing freeze point and additive levels takes two minutes.
Check the block heater works if the truck has one, along with its cord, because those get damaged and nobody notices until the morning they are needed. Inspect hoses for softness and cracking, since cold makes marginal rubber fail.
Salt is the thing that costs you later
Maryland road salt is the underlying cause of a large share of the electrical work we do in spring. Salt spray reaches connectors, harnesses, ground straps and lamp housings, and corrosion wicks along conductors under intact insulation.
Before winter, clean and protect the seven way connector and apply dielectric grease. Check ground straps and battery terminals and protect them. Inspect the harness at the usual chafe points behind the cab. Through the winter, washing the underside when conditions allow genuinely reduces the damage, particularly for trucks working near the water in Dundalk, Essex and Middle River where salt air adds to it.
Tires and the wet
Most Baltimore winter driving is wet rather than snow covered, and worn tread loses wet grip long before it becomes a legal problem. Going into winter close to the minimum on drive tires is a poor bet.
Pressure drops with temperature, so a truck set correctly in September is running low by December. Check pressures as the weather turns, and check them cold rather than after a run.
What a pre winter check costs against what it saves
A seasonal check covering batteries, charging, air dryer, coolant condition, DEF heaters, block heater, lighting and connector protection takes about an hour per unit and can be done in your yard.
Against that, a single frozen air valve on I-695 at six in the morning during a cold snap costs the call out at after hours rates, the wait, and the load consequences, on a day when every provider in the region is already committed. The comparison is not close.
